Free training event for teachers in Medway and Sheppey
At Theatre31 we realise not every teacher or education leader has the confidence to teach Drama and Theatre Studies, whether this be with younger years or more mature students up to GCSE and A’Level.
Icon Theatre have been working with young people for over twenty years and our young person’s programme adapts and uses all the expertise we have learnt on this journey. Being industry leaders in this this field of work, we will be offering Teacher CPD opportunities, specifically for teaching Drama and Theatre Studies.
Our sessions are run term time, after school and take on a peer learning format, with practical and theoretical approaches, led by our professional team and Nancy Hirst, Artistic Director. The aim is to equip participants with easy to pick up and take-away tips and workshops techniques, as well as a breadth of practical exercises and games, that can be pulled out and used on a daily basis.
In order to keep sessions accessible as possible, we plan to run a number of these throughout the academic year, and at varying locations across our target area of Medway and Sheppey, so there be a session happening near you. Places are free, and open to teachers in Medway and Sheppey. So we can manage places as fairly as possible, we ask that only two teachers per school attend however; should our CPD session be something you wish to offer your wider staff team, we can most certainly come to your school and tailor a CPT session aimed for your own cultural community.
What you can expect from our Teachers’ CPD
It might only be two and half hours, but we plan to pack a lot in!
We’ll be imparting some pearls of wisdom about getting young people into drama, sharing tips of the trade for building confidence with teaching the subject, as well as talking about what we can all do to expand good practice.
Don’t worry, you’ll be very much part of the conversation and this is going to be a practical session led by the Icon team. You’ll go away armed with practical tools you can use in the classroom and beyond.
The event will include:
- Approaches to planning and structuring drama workshops (including how you can use drama cross curriculum)
- Exploration of ‘youth led’ method and how you can authentically put young people first
- Games and exercises, including approaches to devising
- Guest Artist from Theatre31’s own creative network, introducing their methodology, tips and advise.
The event will speak to the power of embedding drama and the arts in a school’s community. From improved communication skills to greater confidence, when we give young people access to the arts we see all areas of their learning affected in positive ways.
Our next free Teacher’s CPD session will be in spring 2022.
